Mail-Order & Why Prescriptions Cost So Much!

What are PBMs?

PBMs (Pharmacy Benefit Managers) are third-party administrators who are responsible for processing and paying prescription drug claims. Ultimately, they are increasing the price you pay out of pocket for your prescriptions and decrease your access to your medications. Examples include Caremark, Express Scripts and OptumRx. These PBMs often force patients to get their prescriptions through the PBM owned mail order which limits the patient from using a local pharmacy. This limits a patient to face-toface interactions with a pharmacist and the counseling they can provide, which can be very important to medication adherence and proper administration of medications.

PBM mail-order can waste from values of $3,000 to $200,000 per patient in unused medications. This can be from mail-order still sending prescriptions to those who have passed away or over suppling a patient during therapy changes.

PBMs also affect our active military and veterans. People who are and have helped protected out country and kept our country free are on a three-strike out method. When they choose to pick a local pharmacy three times, ultimately denying the use of mail-order, they will be responsible for 100% of the cost of their prescriptions.
